Azerbaijani Women in ICT Club – FEMMES DIGITALES held its first meeting this year

Azerbaijani Women in ICT Club – FEMMES DIGITALES held its first meeting in 2016 in Baku. Traditionally, each meeting of the Club is hosted by one of its members.

 

This time the meeting was hosted by one of the founding members of the Club – Ms. Nigar Arpadarai, the press-secretary and head of marketing & communications department of Baku Grand Prix, the organizer of Formula-1 in Baku, at the premises of Baku Grand Prix.

 

During the meeting the founder of the Club and B.EST Solutions LLC, Mrs. Jana Krimpe shared the plans of the Club for the first half of 2016.

 

 

According to her, the Club is currently negotiating with the Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan regarding organization of meetings with the girls studying at 9-11 classes in secondary schools with the aim to stimulate them to continue their higher education and build their future career in ICT. The initial phase provides for holding meetings in Baku, but it would be desired to arrange such meetings in the regions of the country and in remote villages as well as with the students of high schools across the country. At the same time, there are plans to conduct a research of the girls studying or working in ICT sector in order to be able to define statistics of female employment in ICT as well as to eliminate stereotypes and fears preventing girls from occupancy in this sector. The Club sets a goal to demonstrate how fascinating, versatile and demanded sphere ICT is, in the examples of the women and girls successfully working in the ICT sphere in Azerbaijan.

 

Another founder of the Club, the marketing manager of Microsoft for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Belarus, Ms. Sabina Parvizi informed the participants about the project “Technovation” which provides for organization of software coding trainings for girls. The members of the Club decided to participate in this project next year; however the preparations will already be started this year.

 

The participants also discussed the organization of the traditional event – Girls in ICT Day and ICT Week in April this year in close cooperation with ADA University and collaboration with relevant government institutions.

 

The members of the Club also discussed the action plan for 2016, set the date of the next meeting timed to 8 March – International Women’s Day which is to be hosted by Ms. Shahla Mammadova, the member of the Club and the advisor to the CEO of Cybernet LLC on March 11. It was also agreed to conduct the first ever bowling contest in Azerbaijan among the women and girls employed in ICT on March 12 timed to the International Women’s Day.

 

The meeting was then continued with the corporate presentation of Baku Grand Prix which hosted the event in its venue. The representative of Baku Grand Prix Ms. Nigar Arpadarai spoke about the preparations and innovative technologies to be used during the Formula-1 contest in Baku this year.

 

At the end, there was a photo-session of FEMMES DIGITALES with the Formula-1 bolide of Baku Grand Prix.

Azerbaijan Women in ICT Club – FEMMES DIGITALES is a non-profit organization established in 2014 with a goal to get more women excited about technology and IT. FEMMES DIGITALES has been designed to be an advocate for women who are currently working for technology companies and for those that may work for business in other market sectors working with technology in their roles. Women in ICT Club ‘FEMMES DIGITALES’ has been created in Azerbaijan

The official opening of Azerbaijani women in ICT Club Femmes Digitales took place within the framework of the exhibition and conference BakuTel-2014. The FEMMES DIGITALES is the first professional structure in the country, bringing together women, related to information and communication technologies

The purpose of the Club is to unite women and girls in the ICT area, working in the public and private sectors, as well as in the sphere of social activity.

Making an opening speech at the ceremony, Elnur Aslanli, head of E-Governence Development Department of the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies (MCHT) noted the importance of creation of such a club.

Speaking at the event the founder of the club Femmes Digitales, Best Solutions CEO Jana Krimpe said despite the fact that she is from Estonia, but she has lived in Azerbaijan for more than 10 years, and has seen a special regard to women in this country, which she has never seen in another country.

“Azerbaijan, which has always played a leading role in the provision of unlimited opportunities for women, acknowledges and supports the leading role played by female professionals in the further development and maintenance of the dynamic and competitive ICT sector. The purpose of the Club is to unite women and girls in the ICT area, working in the public and private sectors, as well as in the sphere of social activity, said the Club’s founder Jana Krimpe. Speaking at the opening of the Club, Sabina Parvizi, Marketing Manager and one of the founders at Microsoft stated the importance of girls’ receiving education in ICT. 10% increase in the number of girls in ICT education may bring about an increase of 3% of GDP, she said.

Then reports were delivered by Bakcell representative Xaver Qambayzade on the topic “What is the woman who was successful in Azerbaijan’s ICT sphere?”, representative from Academy of Ethics Gunel Ibrahimli, “Role of youth organizations in increasing women’s participation in ICT” and representative of company Azerfon LLC Nigar Arpadarai “How to involve women in newly created companies and make their career in ICT sphere.

Gunel Ibrahimli said in her speech that in fact the creation of the club is a message to the world.

“The creation of such a club shows interest among women in Azerbaijan in exact sciences and creation of opportunities for them to acquire knowledge in this area. At present, part of tests to be filled in during recruitment requires ICT skills and knowledge and in the absence of this knowledge women give 70-80% of the labor market to men. That is why parents should not limit their children’s choice of profession and create opportunities for them to receive education and acquire specialized knowledge in this area, where there is seen a high demand in the labour market, and should stand by stereotypes, she said.

The event was also attended by former Estonian Foreign Minister Kristiina Ojuland and Head of the EU delegation in Azerbaijan Malena Mard, spoke and shared their opinions and experience.

The founders and members of the Club are planning their example and practical activities to increase Azerbaijani women’s and girls’ desire to make a career and receive education in this exciting and rapidly growing field, enjoy the ICT benefits as consumers, and users in order to make their life better.

Azerbaijan, which has always played a leading role in the provision of unlimited opportunities for women, acknowledges and supports the leading role played by female professionals in the further development and maintenance of the dynamic and competitive ICT sector.

The world’s growing demand for a range of skills in the ICT sector is a unique opportunity to determine properly the place of girls and women in the industry and provide them with the tools they need to succeed.

FEMMES DIGITALES to conduct its meeting in the run-up to International Women’s Day

During the meeting the founders of the Club “FEMMES DIGITALES” will approve the activity plan for the year 2015, a series of public events including on-site educational program at secondary schools and universities aimed at popularization of ICT among young people and girls in particular. It is also expected to approve the design and concept of the Club’s website and admission of new members. In connection with the upcoming holidays all members of the Club will receive as a gift free Asan İmza SIM-cards. In the course of the meeting a new project on creation of brief documentary video films about professional activity and life of the founders and members of the Club is also planned to be discussed
